Supersonic
"Supersonic" refers to speeds that exceed the speed of sound, which is approximately 343 meters per second (1,125 feet per second) at sea level. This phenomenon occurs when an object travels faster than this speed, creating shock waves that can result in a sonic boom. Supersonic speeds are commonly associated with military aircraft, such as the Concorde and F-22 Raptor, as well as certain spacecraft.
In aviation, supersonic travel allows for faster journeys, significantly reducing flight times. However, it also presents challenges, including increased fuel consumption and noise pollution. As a result, commercial supersonic flights have been limited, with ongoing research aimed at developing quieter and more efficient supersonic jets.
