Sunda Trench
The Sunda Trench is a deep oceanic trench located in the Indian Ocean, near the islands of Sumatra and Java in Indonesia. It is part of the larger Java Trench system and reaches depths of over 7,000 meters (about 23,000 feet). The trench is formed by the subduction of the Australian Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate, making it a significant geological feature.
This trench is known for its seismic activity, including powerful earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in the surrounding region. The area is also home to diverse marine life, making it an important ecological zone. The Sunda Trench plays a crucial role in understanding plate tectonics and oceanography.
