Sun Ra Arkestra
The Sun Ra Arkestra is a musical ensemble founded by the avant-garde jazz musician Sun Ra in the mid-1950s. Known for its experimental approach to jazz, the group blends elements of free jazz, electronic music, and cosmic philosophy. The Arkestra is recognized for its elaborate performances, often featuring elaborate costumes and theatrical elements that reflect Sun Ra's unique vision of space and the universe.
After Sun Ra's passing in 1993, the Arkestra continued to perform under the direction of saxophonist Marshall Allen, who had been a member since the 1950s. The ensemble remains active today, preserving and evolving Sun Ra's innovative legacy while introducing new generations to his music and ideas.
