Stratospheric Clouds
Stratospheric clouds, also known as stratospheric clouds, are a type of cloud that forms in the stratosphere, typically at altitudes between 12 and 50 kilometers (7 to 31 miles) above the Earth's surface. These clouds are often composed of ice crystals and can appear in various forms, including polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) and noctilucent clouds. They are most commonly observed in polar regions and during specific atmospheric conditions.
These clouds play a significant role in the Earth's climate system. For instance, polar stratospheric clouds are linked to ozone depletion, as they provide a surface for chemical reactions that break down ozone molecules. Additionally, noctilucent clouds are the highest clouds in the atmosphere and are often visible during twilight, reflecting sunlight and creating a striking visual effect.
