Stratified Epithelium
Stratified epithelium is a type of tissue composed of multiple layers of cells. This structure provides added protection against physical and chemical stress, making it ideal for areas of the body that experience friction, such as the skin and the lining of the mouth. The outermost layer consists of flat cells, while deeper layers may contain cuboidal or columnar cells.
There are several types of stratified epithelium, including stratified squamous epithelium, stratified cuboidal epithelium, and stratified columnar epithelium. Each type serves specific functions and is found in different locations within the body. For example, stratified squamous epithelium is commonly found in the epidermis, providing a barrier against environmental damage.
