Stratified Epithelial Tissue
Stratified epithelial tissue is a type of tissue composed of multiple layers of cells. This structure provides added protection against physical and chemical stress, making it ideal for areas of the body that experience friction, such as the skin and the lining of the mouth. The cells in the outermost layer are often flat, while those in deeper layers may be more cuboidal or columnar.
There are several types of stratified epithelial tissue, including stratified squamous epithelium, stratified cuboidal epithelium, and stratified columnar epithelium. Each type serves specific functions and is found in different locations throughout the body. For example, stratified squamous epithelium is commonly found in the epidermis, providing a barrier against environmental damage.
