Strategic Arms Reduction Talks
The Strategic Arms Reduction Talks (START) were a series of negotiations between the United States and the Soviet Union aimed at reducing the number of nuclear weapons. Initiated in the late 1980s, these talks sought to limit the deployment of strategic offensive arms, including intercontinental ballistic missiles and nuclear bombers. The agreements reached during these discussions played a crucial role in decreasing the nuclear arsenals of both nations.
The first major agreement, known as START I, was signed in 1991 and led to significant reductions in nuclear warheads and delivery systems. Subsequent agreements, including START II and the New START treaty, continued the efforts to promote arms control and enhance global security by limiting the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
