Stono Rebellion
The Stono Rebellion was a significant slave uprising that occurred in South Carolina on September 9, 1739. A group of enslaved Africans, led by a man named Jemmy, sought to escape to Spanish Florida, where they believed they would find freedom. The rebels gathered weapons and marched south, killing several white colonists along the way.
The rebellion was quickly suppressed by local militia, resulting in the deaths of many participants. In response, the colonial government enacted stricter slave codes to prevent future uprisings, highlighting the tensions between enslaved people and their owners in the American colonies.
