Stonewall
The term "Stonewall" often refers to the Stonewall Inn, a bar in New York City that became a focal point for the LGBTQ+ rights movement. In June 1969, patrons of the inn resisted a police raid, leading to a series of protests known as the Stonewall Riots. These events are widely considered a catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement in the United States.
The Stonewall Riots lasted several days and involved confrontations between the police and the LGBTQ+ community. The riots highlighted the discrimination faced by LGBTQ+ individuals and sparked activism that led to the formation of various advocacy groups, including the Gay Liberation Front. Today, the anniversary of the riots is celebrated as Pride Month.
