Steens Mountain Wilderness
The Steens Mountain Wilderness is located in southeastern Oregon, covering over 170,000 acres of rugged terrain. This area features dramatic landscapes, including steep canyons, high desert plateaus, and diverse ecosystems. The mountain itself rises to an elevation of 9,733 feet, making it the highest point in the Oregon desert.
Established in 2000, the wilderness area is home to various wildlife species, including bighorn sheep and golden eagles. Visitors can enjoy activities such as hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing, with numerous trails that offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The wilderness is managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
