Status and Non-Status
"Status" refers to individuals who are registered as members of a specific Indigenous group, such as a First Nation in Canada. These individuals have certain rights and benefits under the law, including access to specific programs and services provided by the government. Their status is often linked to their ancestry and the community they belong to.
"Non-Status" individuals, on the other hand, are those who identify as Indigenous but are not recognized as members of a specific group. This can occur for various reasons, such as changes in legislation or personal circumstances. Non-Status individuals may not have the same legal rights or access to resources as Status individuals, which can impact their connection to their culture and community.
