Statue of Freedom
The Statue of Freedom is a bronze statue that stands atop the dome of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. Designed by sculptor Thomas Crawford, it was completed in 1863 and symbolizes freedom and liberty. The statue is 19.5 feet tall and weighs approximately 5,000 pounds. It holds a sword in its right hand and a laurel wreath in its left, representing victory and peace.
The statue was originally named "Freedom Triumphant in War and Peace." It was cast in Italy and shipped to the United States in pieces, where it was assembled on the Capitol dome. The Capitol serves as the home of the United States Congress and is a significant symbol of American democracy.
