Star Names
Star names are often derived from ancient languages, primarily Arabic, Greek, and Latin. These names reflect the history of astronomy and the cultures that contributed to our understanding of the night sky. For example, the star Sirius comes from the Greek word for "glowing," while Betelgeuse is derived from Arabic, meaning "the armpit of the giant."
Many stars have multiple names and designations, including Bayer designations, which use Greek letters followed by the name of the constellation. The Hipparcos catalog and the Henry Draper catalog are examples of modern systems that classify stars based on their brightness and spectral characteristics.
