Standard of Ur
The Standard of Ur is an ancient artifact discovered in the Royal Cemetery of Ur, located in present-day Iraq. Dating back to around 2600-2400 BCE, it is a rectangular box made of wood, inlaid with lapis lazuli, shell, and red limestone. The artifact features intricate scenes that depict aspects of Sumerian life, including warfare and banquets, showcasing the social hierarchy of the time.
This object is divided into two main panels: one illustrating scenes of conflict and the other depicting a royal feast. The Standard of Ur is significant for understanding the culture of the Sumerians and their artistic achievements, as well as their complex social structure.
