Stalinist purges
The Stalinist purges were a series of political repressions in the Soviet Union during the late 1930s, primarily under the leadership of Joseph Stalin. These purges aimed to eliminate perceived threats to Stalin's power, including political rivals, military leaders, and ordinary citizens accused of disloyalty or counter-revolutionary activities.
During this period, thousands were arrested, executed, or sent to labor camps known as Gulags. The purges created a climate of fear and suspicion, as people were often denounced by their neighbors or colleagues. This campaign significantly weakened the Soviet military and government, impacting the country's ability to respond to future challenges.
