St. Gertrude of Nivelles
St. Gertrude of Nivelles was a 7th-century abbess and a prominent figure in early Christian history. Born around 626 in what is now Belgium, she was the daughter of Pepin of Landen, a nobleman. Gertrude dedicated her life to God and founded the monastery of Nivelles, where she became known for her piety and leadership.
She is often associated with the care of the sick and the poor, and her influence extended beyond her lifetime. St. Gertrude is venerated as the patron saint of travelers and the mentally ill, and her feast day is celebrated on March 17.
