Special Court for Sierra Leone
The Special Court for Sierra Leone was established in 2002 to prosecute those responsible for serious crimes during the Sierra Leone Civil War, which lasted from 1991 to 2002. It was a hybrid court, combining elements of both international and domestic law, and aimed to deliver justice while promoting national reconciliation.
The court operated in Freetown and was supported by the United Nations. It successfully tried several high-profile figures, including former President Charles Taylor of Liberia, who was convicted for his role in supporting the Sierra Leonean rebels. The court concluded its work in 2013, leaving a legacy of legal precedents in international law.
