South Manitou Island Lighthouse
The South Manitou Island Lighthouse is located on South Manitou Island in Lake Michigan. Built in 1871, this historic lighthouse stands 65 feet tall and was designed to guide ships navigating the treacherous waters of the Great Lakes. It features a distinctive white tower with a black lantern room, making it a recognizable landmark.
The lighthouse was automated in 1935, which reduced the need for a keeper. Today, it is part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, attracting visitors interested in history and nature. The surrounding area offers hiking trails and beautiful views of the lake.
