Sound Localization Cues
Sound localization cues are the auditory signals that help us determine the direction and distance of a sound source. These cues can be divided into two main types: interaural time differences (ITD) and interaural level differences (ILD). ITD refers to the slight difference in the time it takes for a sound to reach each ear, while ILD involves the difference in sound intensity between the ears.
Additionally, spectral cues also play a role in sound localization. These cues arise from the way sounds interact with the shape of the outer ear, which can alter the frequency content of the sound. Together, these cues enable us to accurately perceive where sounds are coming from in our environment.
