Sound Channels
Sound channels are pathways through which sound waves travel in a medium, such as air or water. These channels can be influenced by various factors, including temperature, pressure, and the medium's properties. In oceans, for example, sound travels differently due to layers of water with varying temperatures and salinity, creating distinct sound channels.
In marine environments, the most notable sound channel is the SOFAR channel, which allows sound to travel long distances with minimal loss of energy. This phenomenon is crucial for underwater communication and navigation, as it enables marine animals like whales to communicate over vast distances.
