Sokal Affair
The Sokal Affair was a 1996 incident in which physicist Alan Sokal submitted a deliberately nonsensical article to the cultural studies journal Social Text. The paper, titled "Transgressing the Boundaries: Toward a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity," was filled with jargon and absurd claims, yet it was accepted for publication.
Sokal's goal was to critique the academic left and the use of postmodernist theory in the humanities. He aimed to demonstrate that some scholarly work lacked rigor and could be published without proper scrutiny, sparking debates about academic standards and the validity of certain intellectual movements.
