Smectic
Smectic is a term used in the field of liquid crystals, which are materials that exhibit properties between those of liquids and solid crystals. In the smectic phase, molecules are organized in layers, allowing them to slide over one another while maintaining a certain degree of order. This layered structure gives smectic liquid crystals unique optical and mechanical properties.
There are different types of smectic phases, such as Smectic A and Smectic C, each with distinct molecular arrangements. These phases are important in various applications, including displays and sensors, due to their ability to change orientation in response to electric fields.
