Sir Stamford Raffles
Sir Stamford Raffles was a British statesman and the founder of modern Singapore. Born on July 6, 1781, in Portsmouth, England, he played a significant role in establishing Singapore as a key trading post for the British East India Company in 1819. His vision transformed the island into a bustling port city.
Raffles was also known for his interest in natural history and culture. He collected numerous specimens and artifacts during his travels in Southeast Asia, contributing to the understanding of the region's biodiversity and heritage. He passed away on July 5, 1826, leaving a lasting legacy in Singapore and beyond.
