Signal Peptides
Signal peptides are short sequences of amino acids located at the beginning of a protein. They play a crucial role in directing the protein to its proper location within the cell or outside of it. When a protein is synthesized in the ribosome, the signal peptide acts as a "postal code," guiding the protein to the endoplasmic reticulum or other cellular compartments.
Once the protein reaches its destination, the signal peptide is typically removed by specific enzymes. This process ensures that the protein is correctly processed and folded for its intended function. Signal peptides are essential for the proper functioning of many proteins, including hormones and enzymes.
