Short-billed Dowitcher
The Short-billed Dowitcher is a medium-sized shorebird known for its long, straight bill and distinctive plumage. It typically measures about 9 to 11 inches in length and has a wingspan of around 18 to 22 inches. This bird is often found in wetlands, mudflats, and coastal areas, where it feeds on invertebrates by probing the mud with its bill.
During migration, the Short-billed Dowitcher travels between its breeding grounds in northern Canada and Alaska and its wintering habitats along the coasts of the United States and Central America. It is often seen in flocks, foraging together in shallow waters, and is recognized by its characteristic "sewing machine" feeding motion.
