Shinto Traditions
Shinto is the indigenous spirituality of Japan, characterized by a deep reverence for nature and ancestral spirits. Central to Shinto traditions are rituals and ceremonies that honor kami, which are spirits or deities found in natural elements like trees, rivers, and mountains. These rituals often take place at shrines, where offerings and prayers are made to seek blessings and protection.
Another important aspect of Shinto is the practice of purification, known as misogi. This involves cleansing oneself before entering a shrine or participating in rituals, symbolizing the removal of impurities. Festivals, or matsuri, are also significant, celebrating seasonal changes and honoring local deities, fostering community spirit and connection to nature.
