Shikinen Sengu
Shikinen Sengu is a traditional Japanese ritual that involves the rebuilding of important shrines, particularly the Ise Grand Shrine, every 20 years. This practice has been carried out for over 1,300 years and symbolizes renewal and the impermanence of life. The new structures are built using ancient techniques and materials, ensuring the preservation of cultural heritage.
During the ceremony, the deity of the shrine is transferred to the new building, allowing worship to continue uninterrupted. The old shrine is then dismantled, and its materials are often used in other construction projects, promoting sustainability and respect for nature.
