Sharp-shinned Hawk
The Sharp-shinned Hawk is a small bird of prey found across North America. It is known for its sharp, pointed wings and long tail, which help it maneuver quickly through forests. Adult males typically measure about 9 to 13 inches in length, while females are slightly larger. Their plumage is generally blue-gray on the back and reddish-brown on the chest, making them easily recognizable.
These hawks primarily hunt small birds, using their speed and agility to catch them in mid-flight. They prefer habitats with dense vegetation, such as woodlands and suburban areas. The Sharp-shinned Hawk is a member of the family Accipitridae, which includes other raptors like the Cooper's Hawk and the Red-tailed Hawk.
