Selective Service System
The Selective Service System is a U.S. government agency that manages the registration of individuals for potential military conscription, commonly known as the draft. Established in 1917, it requires all male citizens and immigrants aged 18 to 25 to register. This system ensures that the government can quickly mobilize forces in times of national emergency.
Registration with the Selective Service does not mean individuals will be drafted; it simply maintains a list of eligible individuals. Failure to register can result in penalties, including fines and ineligibility for certain government benefits, such as federal student aid.
