Secondary Somatosensory Cortex
The Secondary Somatosensory Cortex (S2) is a region of the brain located in the parietal lobe, specifically in the lateral part of the postcentral gyrus. It plays a crucial role in processing sensory information related to touch, pain, and temperature. S2 receives input from the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) and is involved in higher-order functions, such as integrating sensory data and contributing to the perception of complex stimuli.
S2 is also important for spatial awareness and the perception of body position. It helps in recognizing the texture and shape of objects, allowing for more refined tactile experiences. This area works closely with other brain regions, including the thalamus and insula, to create a comprehensive understanding of sensory information.
