Scutum Star Cluster
The Scutum Star Cluster, also known as Messier 11, is a rich open star cluster located in the constellation Scutum. It is approximately 6,000 light-years away from Earth and contains around 290 stars. The cluster is notable for its high density of stars, making it one of the most prominent open clusters in the Milky Way.
Discovered by the astronomer William Herschel in 1783, the Scutum Star Cluster is often referred to as the "Wild Duck Cluster" due to its appearance. It is best observed with binoculars or small telescopes, showcasing a beautiful array of stars that are relatively young, with ages estimated between 200 and 300 million years.
