Sciurus vulgaris
Sciurus vulgaris, commonly known as the Eurasian red squirrel, is a small tree-dwelling rodent found across Europe and parts of Asia. It has a bushy tail, large eyes, and reddish-brown fur, which can vary in color. These squirrels primarily inhabit forests, parks, and gardens, where they build nests in tree hollows or branches.
The diet of Sciurus vulgaris mainly consists of nuts, seeds, fruits, and fungi. They play a crucial role in their ecosystem by aiding in seed dispersal, which helps promote forest growth. Their population is affected by habitat loss and competition with the invasive Sciurus carolinensis, or eastern gray squirrel.
