Satrapy
A satrapy was a province or region governed by a satrap, who acted as a local ruler under the authority of a larger empire. This system was notably used in the ancient Persian Empire, where satraps were responsible for collecting taxes, maintaining order, and providing military support. The satrapy system allowed for efficient administration over vast territories.
Satrapies often had a degree of autonomy, but they were closely monitored by the central government to prevent rebellion. The concept of satrapy influenced later administrative systems in empires such as the Macedonian Empire and the Roman Empire, showcasing its lasting impact on governance.
