Sarah Winchester was an American heiress born on September 1839, known for her connection to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. After the death of her husband, William Wirt Winchester, and their infant daughter, she believed that she was cursed by the spirits of those killed by Winchester rifles. To appease these spirits, Sarah began constructing a massive, unconventional house in San Jose, California, known as the Winchester Mystery House. The construction continued for 38 years until her death in 1922, resulting in a labyrinthine structure with numerous rooms, staircases, and doors that lead to nowhere.
