Santa Cruz Island Fox
The Santa Cruz Island Fox is a small subspecies of fox found only on Santa Cruz Island in California's Channel Islands National Park. It is known for its distinctive grayish-brown fur, large ears, and a bushy tail. Adult foxes typically weigh between 2.5 to 6.5 pounds and measure about 24 to 30 inches in length, including the tail.
This fox plays a crucial role in its ecosystem by helping to control the populations of small mammals and insects. Due to habitat loss and the introduction of non-native species, the Santa Cruz Island Fox faced significant threats, but conservation efforts have helped stabilize its population in recent years.
