Salton Sea
The Salton Sea is a large, shallow lake located in California's Imperial Valley. It was formed in 1905 when the Colorado River overflowed, creating a body of water that is now about 35 miles long and 15 miles wide. The lake is situated below sea level and is the largest lake in California.
Due to high evaporation rates, the Salton Sea has become increasingly saline, affecting local wildlife and ecosystems. It is home to various bird species, making it an important stopover for migratory birds along the Pacific Flyway. However, environmental challenges, including pollution and declining water levels, threaten its future.
