Saint Anthony of Egypt
Saint Anthony of Egypt, also known as Saint Anthony the Great, was a Christian monk born around 251 AD in Coma, Egypt. He is often recognized as one of the founders of Christian monasticism. After hearing a sermon about the importance of renouncing worldly possessions, he sold his inheritance and began a life of solitude in the desert, dedicating himself to prayer and asceticism.
His life and teachings inspired many followers, leading to the establishment of monastic communities. Saint Anthony is also known for his struggles against temptations, which are often depicted in art. He is celebrated on January 17 in the Christian calendar.
