Safety matches
Safety matches are a type of match designed to ignite only when struck against a specially prepared surface. This surface is usually found on the matchbox itself, which contains a mixture of chemicals that react with the match head. The design minimizes the risk of accidental ignition, making them safer to use than regular matches.
The match head typically consists of an oxidizing agent, such as potassium chlorate, combined with sulfur and glass powder. When struck, friction generates enough heat to ignite the match. Safety matches are commonly used for lighting candles, stoves, and fireplaces, providing a reliable and controlled flame.
