Sacri Monti
The term "Sacri Monti" refers to a series of sacred mountains in Italy, particularly known for their religious significance and artistic heritage. These sites are characterized by a collection of chapels and shrines that are often adorned with elaborate frescoes and sculptures, reflecting the spiritual and cultural values of the time. The most famous of these is the Sacro Monte di Varallo, which dates back to the late 15th century.
Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Sacri Monti serve as pilgrimage destinations and are important examples of the Baroque style in architecture and art. They were built to provide a visual representation of biblical stories and saints, making them accessible to the faithful. Other notable Sacri Monti include Sacro Monte di Orta and Sacro Monte di Crea.
