SF₆
SF₆, or sulfur hexafluoride, is a colorless, odorless gas that is used primarily as an electrical insulator in high-voltage equipment. It is known for its excellent insulating properties and ability to prevent electrical arcing, making it valuable in the power industry. SF₆ is also used in various applications, including in the production of semiconductors and as a tracer gas in environmental studies.
Despite its useful properties, SF₆ is a potent greenhouse gas, with a global warming potential significantly higher than carbon dioxide. Its long atmospheric lifetime raises concerns about its impact on climate change. Efforts are being made to find alternatives and reduce emissions of SF₆ in industrial applications.
