Russo-Georgian War
The Russo-Georgian War occurred in August 2008 between Russia and Georgia. The conflict primarily centered around the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, where tensions had been escalating for years. The war began when Georgia launched an attack to regain control over South Ossetia, prompting a swift military response from Russia.
The fighting lasted for five days, resulting in significant casualties and displacement of civilians. By the end of the conflict, Russia recognized South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states, a move condemned by Georgia and most of the international community. The war strained relations between Russia and the West.
