Royal Menagerie
The term "Royal Menagerie" refers to a collection of exotic animals kept by a royal family, often for display and entertainment. These menageries were popular in Europe from the Middle Ages through the 19th century, showcasing animals like lions, elephants, and peacocks. They served as symbols of wealth and power, allowing monarchs to demonstrate their status.
One of the most famous royal menageries was at the Tower of London, established during the reign of King Henry III. It housed various animals, including a polar bear and a lion, attracting visitors and serving as an early form of a zoo.
