Rotherhithe Tunnel
The Rotherhithe Tunnel is a road tunnel in London, connecting the districts of Rotherhithe and Wapping. Opened in 1908, it was designed to facilitate traffic across the River Thames. The tunnel is approximately 1.2 kilometers long and runs beneath the river, allowing vehicles to travel between the two areas without needing to use a ferry.
Constructed using a method called the cut-and-cover, the tunnel features a unique circular design. It is an important part of London's transport infrastructure, helping to ease congestion on surrounding roads. The tunnel is also notable for its historical significance, being one of the first underwater tunnels in the city.
