Romanos IV Diogenes
Romanos IV Diogenes was a Byzantine Emperor who reigned from 1068 to 1071. He was born around 1030 and came from a noble family. Romanos is known for his military campaigns against the Seljuk Turks, particularly during the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, where his forces suffered a significant defeat.
After the battle, Romanos was captured by the Seljuks, leading to a power struggle in the Byzantine Empire. His reign ended when he was overthrown in a coup led by Michael VII Doukas. Romanos IV's defeat marked a turning point in Byzantine history, contributing to the empire's decline.
