Right Whale
The Right Whale is a large marine mammal belonging to the family Balaenidae. There are three species: the North Atlantic Right Whale, the North Pacific Right Whale, and the Southern Right Whale. These whales are known for their distinctive callosities, which are rough patches of skin that often host barnacles. Right Whales are baleen whales, meaning they filter-feed on small organisms like plankton and copepods.
Right Whales are critically endangered, with the North Atlantic Right Whale population estimated to be fewer than 350 individuals. They face threats from ship strikes, fishing gear entanglement, and habitat loss. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these whales and their habitats, involving organizations like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and various marine conservation groups.
