Repartimiento
The Repartimiento was a labor system used in colonial Latin America, particularly in the Spanish Empire, during the 16th to 18th centuries. It required indigenous communities to provide a certain number of workers for Spanish landowners or colonial projects. This system aimed to replace the earlier encomienda system, which had been criticized for its harsh treatment of indigenous people.
Under the Repartimiento, indigenous laborers were supposed to work for a limited time and receive wages. However, in practice, many faced exploitation and harsh conditions. The system was part of broader colonial policies that affected the lives of indigenous populations, including their social structures and economies.
