Regulatory Elements
Regulatory elements are specific sequences of DNA that control the expression of genes. They can be found in various locations, such as near the genes they regulate or even far away on the same chromosome. These elements include enhancers, silencers, and promoters, which work together to ensure that genes are turned on or off at the right times and in the right cells.
These elements interact with proteins called transcription factors, which bind to the regulatory sequences to either activate or repress gene expression. Understanding regulatory elements is crucial for studying processes like development, cellular response to signals, and diseases such as cancer, where gene regulation may be disrupted.
