Radiological Dispersal Devices
A Radiological Dispersal Device (RDD), often referred to as a "dirty bomb," combines conventional explosives with radioactive materials. Its primary purpose is to spread radioactive contamination over a wide area, causing panic and disruption rather than mass casualties. RDDs are designed to exploit the psychological impact of radiation fear, rather than being an effective weapon of mass destruction.
The radioactive materials used in RDDs can come from various sources, including medical equipment, industrial applications, or research facilities. While the immediate physical harm from an RDD may be limited, the long-term effects of contamination and the public's response can lead to significant social and economic consequences, highlighting the importance of preparedness and response strategies.
