R-Process
The R-Process, or rapid neutron capture process, is a nucleosynthesis process responsible for creating heavy elements in the universe. It occurs in extreme environments, such as during the explosive events of supernovae or the merging of neutron stars. In these conditions, atomic nuclei rapidly capture neutrons, leading to the formation of unstable isotopes that eventually decay into stable heavy elements.
This process is crucial for understanding the origin of many heavy elements, including gold, platinum, and uranium. The R-Process contributes significantly to the chemical diversity of the universe, helping to explain the presence of these elements in stars, planets, and even in our own Earth.
