Public Defenders
Public defenders are lawyers provided by the government to represent individuals who cannot afford to hire a private attorney. They work within the criminal justice system to ensure that everyone has access to legal representation, which is a fundamental right under the Sixth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Public defenders handle a variety of cases, including misdemeanors and felonies, and strive to provide effective defense for their clients.
These attorneys often work in public defender offices, which are funded by state or local governments. Due to high caseloads and limited resources, public defenders may face challenges in dedicating sufficient time to each case. Despite these obstacles, they play a crucial role in upholding the principle of fair trial and protecting the rights of the accused.
